Harperrig Reservoir is one of the Lothians' most popular and longest-established brown trout venues.
At approx 220 acres it lies alongside the A70 west of Balerno at the foot of the Cauldstane Slap. Generally shallow, the reservoir averages less than ten feet deep over most of it's area and as such is ideal for bank, boat and float tube anglers. The reservoir fishes well right from opening day and given a bit of March sunshine trout can be caught from the surface using floating lines with traditional wet flies and palmers fished as teams of three, the fish being in the main free-rising and ready takers. With it's quiet moorland setting, on a summer's evening with fish rising all over the reservoir and the Pentlands bathed in an orange glow it is easy to forget that the sprawling, bustling city of Edinburgh is less than ten miles away.
Why not come and spend a few hours fly fishing for feisty brown trout, whether your preference be bank, boat or float tube we are sure you will not be disappointed.
